Baroque Chapel, Royal Hospital Kilmainham

Founded in 1680 by James Butler of Kilkenny Castle, who was Duke of Ormonde and Viceroy to King Charles II, the Royal Hospital was inspired by Les Invalides’ in Paris. The architect for was William Robinson, official State Surveyor General.

Of his many other buildings only Marsh’s Library, Dublin and Charles Fort, Kinsale, still stand. Since 1991, the Irish Museum of Modern Art has presented international and Irish art of the 21stcentury here, with associated educational and community programmes. The striking original craftsmanship of the Baroque Chapel is still retained, featuring oak carvings and a flamboyant Baroque ceiling. The Irish-made stained glass windows, dating from the 19th century depict the Coats of Arms of the various masters.
