Masterclasses

IIB Music in Great Irish Houses is pleased to offer up-and-coming Irish music students a unique opportunity to work with some of the distinguished, world-class artists appearing in this year’s Festival. These masterclasses in piano, cello and chamber music will be given by a number of our eminent performers and applications are invited from interested musicians.

Applications should detail the proposed work, and also an outline of the student’s/group’s performance experience and competition successes. The deadline for all applications is Tuesday 6th May.

Angela Hewitt is currently on a world tour of Bach’s 48 Preludes and Fugues and will be holding a public Bach Specialist Performance masterclass on Thursday June 12th from 3.00pm to 5.00pm in the National Gallery of Ireland. “The pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time” offers a wealth of knowledge and insight into the complexities of Bach’s works for keyboard. A maximum of three places will be available and applicants may be requested to audition.

Cellist Steven Doane combines a performing career with his busy teaching schedule at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and is delighted to offer his expertise to young Irish cellists. The masterclass takes place on Thursday June 12th from 10.00am to 1.00pm in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, with opportunities for up to five students to participate.

In Cork, Krzysztof Chorzelski (viola) and Laura Samuel (violin), members of the Belcea Quartet, considered one of the leading quartets of the new generation, will work with young chamber groups. This masterclass will take place on Thursday 5th June from 3.30pm to 6.00pm at the CIT Cork School of Music, and is limited to string chamber groups only.

There is no charge for these masterclasses for successful candidates. Musicians as observers and members of the public are also welcome. Tickets are free for masterclasses in the RIAM and CIT Cork School of Music, and €5 for the National Gallery.

All applications should be sent to:
